9 Life Lessons from Kate Hudson

9 Life Lessons from Kate Hudson

>As seen in the July 2005 issue of InStyle Magazine

>ONE
See the big picture "I'm making sure that I have a very full life. I think with a lot of parents their world ends up revolving around their kids — it's a natural instinct. But then you forget about yourself, your relationship with your husband, your career—and inevitably you end up resenting something or somebody. My parents were good at avoiding that. I hope I can balance things as gracefully as they did."

>TWO
Try a little tenderness "Just day-to-day things in a marriage, like making his tea in the morning, or looking at him and saying, 'Honey you don't have to get up,' because with his job he's u all night. He's always doing little things too. He'll go out in the morning and bring me back a cappuccino, or come back with home magazines for me. It's just being aware of each other."

>THREE
Embrace the quirks "It drives Chris crazy that I can nurse a cup of coffee all day—but deep down he loves it. And sometimes I feel like a comedian's wife—you know, where you've heard the same joke over and over again? It's like, Chris will tell a joke and, if it's good, he runs with it forever. But it doesn't drive me crazy-that's why I love him so much. He loves his shtick."

>FOUR
Don't sweat the small stuff "Because I grew up in it, I know what a career in show business entails. You're gonna be on top and you're gonna be on the bottom. There's always going to be somebody younger, prettier and better. Everybody's replaceable. My focus is on doing the best job I can, and then concentrating on my family. That's how I was raised."

>FIVE
Go ahead-indulge yourself "I'm making sure that I have a very full life. I think with a lot of parents their world ends up revolving around their kids — it's a natural instinct. But then you forget about yourself, your relationship with your husband, your career-and inevitably you end up resenting something or somebody. My parents were good at avoiding that. I hope I can balance things as gracefully as they did."

>SIX
Diet, shmiet! "I don't watch what I eat for dietary purposes—I do it to get extra energy. But I cheat all the time. There's this really great restaurant in Greenwich Village called Babbo, and I can't go there without eating everything. One of my favorite dishes is the goose liver ravioli with the balsamic brown butter sauce."

>SEVEN
Get a room "Chris and I like to have a good time. I think playing together, making the conscious effort—especially when you have children, even though you're tired in the morning—is important to a relationship. When you have kids you usually have to leave the house, maybe get a hotel room. For us that would be anyplace with a big tub."

>EIGHT
Mix it up "Here's one recipe I'm willing to give up—for margaritas. Boil about nine ounces of water, adding a little less than a half-cup of sugar, so it's like syrup. Add one cup lemon juice, a hal-cup lime juice, a big bottle of bottles water and tequila-Patron's my faovrite—to taste. I do it early and chill for later. Serve it on ice or shaken, like a martini"

>NINE
Carpe Diem, Sister "Ever since I was little I've been like, I have once chance to live this life, so why shouldn't I have the best &$#@% time?"
